I made this watercolor painting after reading "The Woman Hanging from the Thirteenth Floor Window" in a English class. I made it as a response to an assignment that asked us to reimagine or interpret a piece of literature in a different medium. I really enjoyed Joy Harjo's poem and wanted to respond to the poem in a way that questioned what happened after the last line of the poem. I tried to do this in a way that did not draw any conclusions for the viewer, just as Harjo's poem was elusive about the true nature and end to her character's dilemma. The window in the painting is shut and there is no woman in sight. Whether this means that the woman crawled up or was helped up from the ledge or let go is up to the viewer to decide.
